It is said over and over again that “American’s are some of the most obese people in the world.” The nutrition lesson is a great opportunity to get young kids aware of what they are eating. Young children are often totally unaware of how much junk food they are eating. This summer part of Camp Challenge was the challenge to resist eating something sweet everyday and to choose a sweet twice a week. My school offers sweets at lunch and dinner and the kids can get as much as they want. Teaching the kids how to read labels and journal what they are eating and drinking was an eye opener. We have taken sodas out of the mess hall and now they only have ice tea and flavored water. Sometimes you may not be able to teach each and every lesson, but go through the lessons and make a decision to teach what is valuable to your kids at the present time. All the lessons are valuable, but when I see kids on ADHA medication, blood pressure medication, and other meds, to me, it’s time to take a look at what they are fueling their bodies with. I’m taking the lesson one step farther and we researched simple but nutritional meals that they can help their mother fix for dinner one night a week. I showed them an episode of junior master chief and jr chopped to show them they are not too young to be proactive in menu chooses. I made a deal with the class that if they made good menu choices for 5 days on following week, I would personally bake them something special. We then talked about how hard was it to not have something sweet everyday. How many Red Bull’s they were drinking a day etc. Don’t judge me, but I believe that what a kid eats impacts that ADHA, ADD med’s. Having the ability to buy sodas, Red Bull, skipping meals, all have an impact on their ability to function properly in the classroom. Just my thoughts.
