We all know that the Service Learning Projects are supposed to be lead my the cadets, and every now and again they may get off track and you have to help them get back on the right path, for example my cadets always want to do a beach clean-up. Why? Because it's easy and does not require much from them. Even though it's "Their" project, I help direct them on the path that I want them on. In other words, I usually have an idea of what I want them to do but I make it appear as if it was their idea.
During the 2018 CHiSL Conference, we discussed starting a thread to put some suggestions out there for projects.
So here's the thread. Since we all come form different schools and different circumstances, some of the suggestions may be doable and some may not. We are all doing amazing things in our schools, so post some of your favorite projects or any ideas you may have. It's all about, "Teachers helping Teachers."
SUGGESTIONS:
1. Have the cadets research where the local fire station is located. Have the cadets write letters of appreciation for all they do. Select three or four cadets to take to the fire station, and have them deliver the handwritten notes and a cake.
2. Have the cadets do research on the local food bank and host a food drive. (Have them come up with a goal (using SMART Goals) on how many pounds or canned goods they want to acquire.)
3. Have the cadets host a "New Socks" drive and then donate the new socks to your local shelter. (Again, taking a few cadets to the shelter to present the socks to the person running the shelter) They could even donate tooth brushes etc.
4. If you have a Ronald McDonald House close by, that is an excellent place to perform Service Learning. If your cadets are talented, they can entertain the families while the families are eating dinner or the cadets can play with the siblings, or take coloring books and color with the younger kids, etc. There are several things that can be done at the Ronald McDonald House.
There's a variety of projects that can be done for Service Learning. Move pass your obstacles and only focus on how you can execute the project. You will be amazed at how creative your cadets can be, and you won't get burned out from doing the same project over and over again.
